Liberty Select is a select, boundary-based youth basketball program that serves as the official feeder to Liberty High School Basketball. In simple terms, “select” or “feeder” are used to designate programs, such as Liberty Select, that are available to athletes that live within a designated high school boundary area. This differentiates from other basketball teams, such as recreational and AAU programs, which are typically open to all athletes regardless of where they reside. A key benefit of “select” or “feeder” programs is that athletes residing in the same community have an opportunity to develop and compete together as they move towards high school.
Here’s an overview of how Liberty Select fits within the broader youth basketball landscape:
Recreational Basketball. Recreational leagues (such as Issaquah Rec or i9 Sports) are typically open to all participants, focus on broad participation, and emphasize introductory and recreational-level skill development. Teams are often formed without tryouts, and competition levels can vary widely.
Select/Feeder Basketball (Liberty Select). Select or feeder programs like Liberty Select offer more competition than recreational basketball and are organized around high school boundaries. For example, for Liberty Select, all athletes must reside within the Liberty High School boundary area, and teams compete against other select programs throughout the region in the Eastside Travel League and in local tournaments. This model allows players to develop alongside peers they are likely to play with in high school, while receiving more structured coaching, practice time, and competitive game experience.
AAU Basketball. AAU programs are typically not boundary-based and allow athletes to participate regardless of where they live. At the highest levels, these programs can be highly competitive and often emphasize tournament play and broader exposure across regions or states.
Liberty Select is intentionally designed to sit between recreational basketball and AAU. Our focus is on long-term development, community connection, and preparing athletes for the Liberty High School program, while still providing a competitive and challenging basketball experience.ription text goes here
